Renter Tips for Peer-to-Peer Trips
Small habits at pickup and return prevent most fee arguments and one-star surprises.
Note. Not legal counsel. Your booking terms control what you owe.
Before you book
- Filter for unlimited mileage if you plan highway days or multi-city drives.
- Read cancellation windows — last-minute changes often cost more than traditional agencies.
- Check whether the listing bans out-of-state travel, toll roads, or rideshare use.
- For airport trips, confirm the exact delivery location and wait-time rules.
- Compare protection tiers against your credit-card rental coverage (if any).
At pickup: document everything
- Walk around the car in daylight when possible.
- Photograph every panel, wheels, windshield, roof, and interior seats.
- Take a clear shot of the odometer and fuel (or charge) level.
- Note existing stains, curb rash, and stone chips in the trip chat before you drive away.
- Test headlights, wipers, and that you understand how to lock the car.
Timestamped phone photos stored in the app messages are usually stronger evidence than a verbal “it was already there.”
During the trip
- Keep communication inside the platform — off-app payments can void protections.
- Report mechanical issues early; do not keep driving a car that feels unsafe.
- Watch mileage if your plan is limited; short daily hops add up faster than people expect.
- Park legally. Parking tickets and toll violations are typically passed to the renter.
- Do not smoke in the car even if local laws allow it outdoors — cleaning fees are common.
Fuel, charge, and cleaning
Most listings ask you to return the car at the same fuel or charge level. Overfilling is better than returning low. For EVs, leave enough range for the host’s next guest if the listing spells out a minimum percentage.
Return the cabin tidy: remove trash, shake out sand, and wipe obvious spills. You are not expected to detail the car unless the listing requires a professional clean.
Return checklist
- Arrive within the agreed window
- Match fuel / charge level
- Photograph the car again from the same angles as pickup
- Leave keys exactly where instructed
- Complete the app return flow so the trip officially ends
If a host claims damage
Stay calm and reply with your pickup photos. Escalate through the platform’s resolution center rather than arguing only in text. Keep receipts for any approved repairs you arranged during the trip. See also Insurance & protection.
