How Peer-to-Peer Car Rental Works
From search to return: the typical guest flow on a US car-sharing marketplace.
Note. Platform rules change. Always follow the instructions inside your booking and on turo.com.
The guest journey
- Search by place and dates Enter a city, neighborhood, or airport. Filter by vehicle type, price, automatic transmission, EV, unlimited mileage, or instant book when available.
- Read the listing carefully Check included miles, deposit holds, smoking/pet rules, age requirements, and whether the host delivers to an airport curb or requires a meetup.
- Request or instant-book Some listings approve automatically; others wait for the host. You typically are not charged the full trip until the booking is confirmed (subject to platform payment timing).
- Complete checkout Choose a protection plan tier if offered, add extras, and review the all-in total with tax.
- Pickup Meet the host or use a lockbox / keyless instructions. Inspect the car, document condition with photos, and confirm fuel level and odometer against the listing notes.
- During the trip Drive as you would a rental: obey local laws, stay within mileage unless upgraded, and contact the host through the app if something mechanical goes wrong.
- Return Arrive on time, match the agreed fuel level, photograph the car again, and complete the return checklist in the app. Late returns can trigger extra charges.
Instant book vs. request to book
| Type | What happens | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Instant book | Approved immediately if you meet the listing criteria | You need certainty for a flight or tight schedule |
| Request to book | Host reviews your profile and trip details first | You can wait a few hours for a reply |
Documents and eligibility
Most US guests need:
- A valid driver’s license that the platform can verify
- A payment method that can hold a security deposit if required
- To meet the minimum age for that listing (often 21+, sometimes higher for premium cars)
- A clean enough driving history for the platform’s screening rules
International visitors should confirm whether an International Driving Permit is required alongside their home license for the states they will drive in.
Pickup styles you will see
- Meetup — host hands over keys in person
- Lockbox / key cafe — coded access near a parking spot
- Delivery — host brings the car to an address or airport zone for a fee
